It seems to be believed by many would-be business owners that being good at what you do is all you need to get all the business you want. This is far from true and many skilled people start and go out of business each and every year because of a lack of marketing.

Imagine a carpenter who is a very skilled and produces high-quality products such as cabinets and dresses. No other carpenter can make kitchen cabinets as well as he can. He decides to go into business for himself. He sets up his cabinet making shop in his garage where he already has all the tools that he needs. All he needs now are some customers. He waits for the phone to ring but nothing happens. He waits two weeks and still no phone calls from anyone interested in his skills. The problem is that no one knows who he is or what he is highly skilled in cabinet making. he never got the word out that he is available for hire. He did not market himself.

The primary task that must be completed for every business is the task of marketing. Marketing must be done on a consistent basis. Even if you have been in business for several years and have past loyal customers you still need to market. There is always a need to find new customers.

It is also important to keep in touch with them. You never want your clients and referral sources to forget about you and your service. Happy past clients are the easiest to sell again to. They already know, like and trust you. With past clients, you need to keep in touch and let them know of other services you provide.

Paulo Dalla Nora Macedo- Providing an excellent service or product is a fantastic start towards maintaining a loyal customer or referral base. It alone is not enough. it is near-tragic when a happy client refers business to someone other than you because they were not sure that you were still doing business. When this happens it is the fault of the marketing person of the business.

Clients should never forget that you exist and that you are in business. No matter what the skill and quality level the primary task of a business is marketing. Without clients to serve there really is not much business activity to speak of. Without marketing, there will not be any or enough clients to serve. Now go market.

Paulo Dalla Nora Macedo has a skilled in marketing, strategy, fundraising, business planning, venture capital, innovation, and growth. Strong business development professional with an MBA from INSEAD and an undergraduate Marketing degree from U.C. Berkeley.
